1. d4 d6
The move 1.d4 d6 is the most flexible of the modest defenses: Black prepares ...e6 or ...g6 and waits for White's setup before choosing between an Old Indian (...Nd7 with ...e5), a Rat structure or Pirc-style kingside fianchetto. Nothing is given away — but nothing is contested either, so White gets a free hand in the center.
White's most testing setups take the full center: 2.c4 followed by Nc3 and e4 (reaching Pirc and Old Indian positions with an extra move already played) or the London and Colle build-ups, against which Black's ...e5 break is the equalizing lever. For Black, move-order accuracy matters more than memory: the ...e5 strike must land when the d4-pawn is properly tied down, or the small space deficit becomes permanent.
