Zukertort Opening A04
A — Flank openings · Family: Zukertort Opening
1. Nf3
The Zukertort Opening (1.Nf3) is the most flexible first move in chess: White delays every commitment, keeping routes into Réti set-ups, the King's Indian Attack, Colle systems or even direct queen's pawn games. Named after the 19th-century grandmaster Johannes Zukertort, it is the favorite universal weapon of players who prefer plans to memory.
Typical patterns: c4 and g3 fianchetto systems (the Réti), and the King's Indian Attack — d3, Nbd2, g3, Bg2, e4 — with its slow, methodical kingside storm. The recurring theme is deferred central decision: White reacts to Black's setup rather than imposing one. Flexibility is the strategy; concrete theory is minimal.
