The position after 1.Nf3 d5 is a fork in the flank road: by occupying the center Black has given up part of the move-order fight, and White now picks the structure — 2.d4 transposes to classical queen's-pawn openings, 2.c4 heads for Réti territory with an early gambit nuance (2...dxc4 3.e3 Bxc4 regains the pawn with development gains), and the quiet 2.g3 or 2.d3 leads to the King's Indian Attack.

Black's early ...d5 is double-edged: it claims a fair share of the center, but it also fixes a target. In the Réti lines White pressures d5 with b3, c4 and the fianchettoed bishop, often offering the c4-pawn to accelerate development; in KIA set-ups White builds d3/e4 behind the d5-pawn and plays for kingside space with Nbd2-f1-g3. Knowing which pawn lever to allow — and when to strike with e4 or d4 — is the whole art of this A06 complex.
