The g6 Exchange
Exchanging the bishop for the knight on g6 wrecks the cover of the king: recapturing with the f-pawn or the h-pawn leaves doubled g-pawns and an open file. The attacker then directs rooks and queen against the g-file, while the defender's remaining bishop often stays out of play. Nearly every example below features this trade and its consequences.
