Imitating the Exchange
Imitating the exchange means making a move that resembles a trade — while actually only threatening it. The opponent keeps his pieces away from the squares where the 'exchange' would happen, and the central point remains in friendly hands. The examples show this single, frequently-seen aim: keeping the enemy knight out of the centre.
